Introduction

The Crane Operator (Offshore) course is specifically designed to provide participants with the skills, knowledge, and practical experience necessary to safely operate cranes in offshore environments, such as oil rigs, offshore platforms, and vessels. This course covers the unique challenges of offshore crane operations, including handling heavy loads, working in adverse weather conditions, and complying with strict safety regulations. Participants will gain the expertise to perform crane operations in a variety of offshore settings, ensuring safe and efficient lifting procedures while minimizing risk to personnel and equipment.

Objective

By the end of the course, participants will be able to understand

  • Understand the principles and operation of offshore cranes, including key components and configurations.
  • Learn offshore crane safety protocols, including handling dangerous weather conditions and equipment risks.
  • Develop practical skills to perform load calculations, read load charts, and implement safe lifting plans.
  • Understand the regulatory requirements and industry standards for offshore crane operations (e.g., API, IMO, SOLAS).
  • Gain hands-on experience in operating offshore cranes, including safety checks, emergency procedures, and communication with crews.
  • Learn how to safely handle complex offshore lifting operations and high-risk scenarios.
  • Prepare for certification as an offshore crane operator and ensure compliance with industry safety standards.

Audience
  • Crane operators working or planning to work in offshore environments.
  • Offshore rig personnel, including supervisors, safety officers, and engineers, involved in crane operations.
  • Maintenance personnel who inspect and maintain offshore cranes.
  • Anyone interested in pursuing a career in offshore crane operation or seeking certification.
  • Offshore operations managers or those overseeing lifting operations on platforms or vessels.
Content

Day 1: Introduction to Offshore Crane Operations

  • Overview of offshore cranes: Types (e.g., pedestal cranes, knuckle boom cranes) and configurations used on oil rigs and vessels.
  • Key components and functions of offshore cranes: Boom, hoist, winch, and lifting gear.
  • Offshore crane operational limits: Understanding weight, reach, and environmental factors.
  • Regulatory standards for offshore crane operations: SOLAS, API, IMO, local safety regulations.
  • Overview of offshore lifting operations: Importance of crane safety in offshore environments.
  • Introduction to the offshore operational environment: Sea conditions, platform structures, and challenges faced during operations.

Day 2: Safety Standards, Procedures, and Risk Management

  • Offshore crane safety: Personal protective equipment (PPE), safety harnesses, and fall protection.
  • Offshore site hazards: Environmental conditions (wind, waves, and lightning), equipment failures, and personnel safety.
  • Risk management strategies in offshore lifting operations.
  • Emergency procedures: Evacuation plans, crane failure response, and spill containment.
  • Communication protocols: Radio communication, hand signals, and teamwork.
  • Managing high-risk loads: Lifting in extreme conditions and ensuring load stability.

Day 3: Offshore Crane Inspections, Load Calculations, and Planning

  • Offshore crane pre-operational checks: Inspecting crane components, hoist systems, and rigging equipment.
  • Understanding and reading load charts: Interpreting crane capacity, weight limits, and operational ranges.
  • Load calculations: Factors affecting crane capacity (e.g., load radius, boom angle, wind speed).
  • Creating and implementing safe lifting plans: Pre-lift checks, crane setup, and communication with the crew.
  • Proper rigging techniques for offshore lifting: Safe load rigging, sling types, and load attachments.

Day 4: Operating Offshore Cranes and Practical Skills

  • Load handling techniques: Lifting, moving, and placing heavy or complex loads.
  • Operating in challenging weather: High winds, rough seas, and low visibility conditions.
  • Offshore crane positioning: Ensuring safe reach and stability in the offshore environment.
  • Safe interaction with ground crews: Using signals and maintaining communication.
  • Emergency drills: Responding to mechanical failures, safety breaches, and accidents.

Day 5: Offshore Crane Certification Review and Final Assessments

  • Review of key course concepts: Offshore crane safety, operational techniques, and load calculations.
  • Written examination: Testing knowledge of crane operation, safety regulations, and risk management.
  • Emergency response drills: Handling simulated offshore emergencies.
  • Understanding certification requirements for offshore crane operators.
  • Final Q&A and review session: Addressing any remaining questions or concerns.

NOTE:

Pre-& Post Tests will be conducted.

Case Studies, Group Exercises, Group Discussions, Last Day reviews, and assessments will be carried out.
