Objective

By the end of the course, participants will be able to understand

• Understand the principles of oil spill behavior, including factors affecting oil movement and spread.
• Gain knowledge on aerial surveillance techniques for oil spill detection and monitoring.
• Learn how to operate and utilize surveillance equipment such as cameras and sensors during aerial surveys.
• Be capable of effectively documenting and reporting oil spill incidents.
• Understand the legal and environmental considerations of oil spill response operations.
• Develop proficiency in coordinating with response teams based on aerial survey data.
• Improve practical skills in evaluating oil spill size, type, and impact from the air.

Content

Day 1: Introduction to Oil Spills and Aerial Surveillance

• Overview of oil spill types, sources, and impacts
• Factors influencing oil spill behavior (weather, sea conditions, etc.)
• The role of aerial surveillance in oil spill response
• Safety protocols and regulations in aerial surveillance operations

Day 2: Aerial Surveillance Techniques

• Basic principles of aerial observation and flight operations
• Types of aerial surveillance platforms (manned aircraft, drones, satellites)
• Techniques for detecting and identifying oil spills from the air
• Overview of surveillance equipment (cameras, sensors, infrared)

Day 3: Oil Spill Assessment from the Air

• Methods for assessing the size, type, and spread of oil spills
• Evaluation of environmental impact using aerial data
• Using photography and video for oil spill documentation
• Reporting and mapping oil spill data

Day 4: Data Collection and Reporting

• Best practices for documenting oil spill observations
• Use of GPS and other tools for accurate reporting
• Methods for reporting to response teams and authorities
• Legal and regulatory frameworks for reporting and response

Day 5: Practical Exercises and Simulation

• Simulated aerial survey of an oil spill scenario
• Data collection, assessment, and reporting in real-time
• Group discussion on lessons learned and best practices
• Course wrap-up and certification exam

NOTE:

Pre-& Post Tests will be conducted.

Case Studies, Group Exercises, Group Discussions, Last Day reviews, and assessments will be carried out.

Methodology

A highly interactive combination of lectures and discussion sessions will be managed to maximize the amount and quality of information and knowledge transfer. The sessions will start by raising the most relevant questions and motivating everybody to find the right answers. You will also be encouraged to raise your own questions and to share in the development of the right answers using your own analysis and experiences.  Tests of multiple-choice type will be made available on daily basis to examine the effectiveness of delivering the course.
